Hi all! Today I’m really stepping outside my familiar comfort zone. Andy Skinner is hosting a new challenge – Bold & Bright. I’m very much a grunge girl and I have always loved Andy’s faux rust techniques. For this challenge I really tried to brighten my palette using products I already had.
I’ve been in love with DecoArt’s Media line for a long time and I actually had some bright colors in my stash. I started with a substrate of chipboard and added a background image from my personal photo stash (from our wonderful junkyard that is no more – see previous post). I painted over the entire thing with ultra-matte varnish (one of my most fave products). If you’ve never used this I highly recommend it. It leaves a beautifully matte finish which you can then build on without fear of ruining whatever is underneath (and great for hiding the shiny glue that accidentally seeped out onto your project).
Next I applied modeling paste tinted with cobalt teal hue through Andy’s ‘shredded’ stencil on transit #1 and ‘Industrial Elements’ on Transit #2 . I then had fun rubbing and splattering various colors until I was pretty happy with it. I also tried a new idea I had and sprayed/splattered white and titian buff and let that dry. Then I used several colors of marker over the white. This made a sort of translucent effect which I thought turned out pretty neat.
I happened to have some vintage rail tickets which I scanned and altered (and printed out as a sticker) to add a bit of purple hue. This whole project was really fun and playful and I can’t say enough how much I love Andy’s products! I think I’ll use these as covers and bind them into a journal or something similar.
